Bhodan Khmelnitsky Monument
Bohdan Khmelnytsky (born 1595, died 1657) was the leader (1648-57) of the Zaporozhian Cossacks who organized a rebellion against Polish rule in Ukraine that ultimately led to the transfer of the Ukrainian lands east of the Dnieper River from Polish to Russian control.
Khmelnytsky is revered as a national hero who pushed for Ukrainian independence.
Interestingly many historians view him in a very different light, highlighting his horrific deeds that led to the murder of tens-of-thousands of innocent people. It is situated between St Sofia's and St Michael's in central Kiev not far from the main street Kreshchatyk.
How to Get There & What To See
Almost all the best monuments in Kiev (Kyiv) are located in easy walking distance of each other. The Bhodan Khmelnitsky monument is located in the city centre and is easy to find.
The easiest way to get there is to start from Independence square. On the other side of the road from the Independence square monument you will see the other side of the square with fountains and seats. Look for McDonalds and Kozatskiy hotel. In between the two of these places you will see a road going up the hill called Sofivs'ka Street. Walk to the end of the street until you reach the intersection with Volodymyrska street. In front of you will be Sofiyivska square.
Head towards the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Sofia Square and you will find the monument right there.
