Motherland Monument

Rodina Mat - Motherland Statue

Not to be missed! Awe inspiring piece of architecture that can be seen for miles around but absolutely stunning close up. An incredible sculpture more than 102 metres high, in fact higher than the statue of Liberty in America. It is known locally as the "Motherland Monument".

Motherland Monument

Rodina-Mat monument  was created by a famous soviet sculpture called Evgeniy Vuchetich. It was inaugurated by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in 1981,  the second and the last Nation's Mother monument to be erected in the former USSR.
Rodina Mat, or the Motherland Statue as it is fondly called, is part of  the Great Patriotic war museum. The whole complex occupies a territory of 20 hectares. It also includes Great Patriotic war museum, located directly under the monument. Sometimes it is possible to take a lift up to the top of the monument but not always available.

The Great Patriotic War Museum

The Motherland monument in Kiev is situated on a huge territory of the Great Patriotic war museum. Apart from the war museum there are a number of other museums related to combat. One in particular is worth a visit where you can find a collection of Russian and Ukrainian planes, tanks and military hardware on show.

If you are feeling energetic and want to maximise your sightseeing experience in this area, you could allocate a whole day to see this together with the Pechersk Lavra and Holodomor Museum which are situated close by.
